Private Residence

Frederick, MD
Overview

The owners of this midcentury modern home requested a second-floor addition which would add to the unique style of existing one-story structure. Utilizing a similar motif to the current vaulted family room BA created a second-floor space that maximized light and air allowing for view down to both Middletown valley and the City of Frederick. Accessed via a custom glass stair tower the second floor is pinned down to the existing structure with a massive bank of fireplaces providing venting for four flues including one from a pizza oven in the newly created interior courtyard which provides a reprieve from the often-excessive winds.

The interior finishes were selected by the client’s interior designer Lydia Manalo who superbly blended the midcentury modern style of the exiting structure with the new addition. The second floor consists of a new bedroom with clerestory windows and an ensuite bathroom as well as a great room with room for a pool table, shuffleboard, a large seating area with full height built-in media and display area, and a large exterior deck to take in the magnificent views down into Middletown valley. The first floor includes a new mudroom with full bathroom, a covered patio, and a small reading nook created by utilizing the extra space underneath the custom wood and metal stair.
